Getting to Know the Different Types of Heart Disease

November 11, 2011

To date, over 50 different types of heart disease have been identified by medical experts, and the most common among them is coronary artery disease. Heart diseases can be classified based on whether they occur at birth (congenital heart diseases) or develop during the course of a lifetime (acquired heart disease). They are also grouped according to the parts of the heart, blood vessels, and systems they affect.

Heart Diseases Affecting the Heart Chambers

  • Congestive heart failure, such as diastolic dysfunction and systolic dysfunction
  • Cor pulmonale, or pulmonary heart disease

Heart Diseases in Heart Muscles

  • Cardiomyopathy, including dilated cardiomyopathy, restrictive cardiomyopathy, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
  • Myocarditis

  • Mitral stenosis
  • Mitral valve prolapsed
  • Mitral valve regurgitation
  • Tricuspid stenosis
  • Tricuspid regurgitation
  • Aortid stenosis
  • Aortid regurgitation
  • Rheumatic heart disease

Heart Diseases in Arteries or Veins

  • Coronary heart disease, also known as heart disease, coronary heart disease, or ischemic heart disease
  • Angina pectoris, such as stable angina, unstable angina, and variant angina
  • Myocardial infarction, or heart attack
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Silent ischemia

Heart Diseases within the Electrical System

  • Atrial fibrillation
  • Atrial flutter
  • Premature atrial contractions, or premature atrial complexes
  • Sinus bradycardia
  • Sinus tachycardia
  • Heart block
  • Bundle branch block
  • Supraventricular tachycardia, or atrial tachycardia
  • Paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, or paroxysmal atrial tachycardia
  • Premature ventricular contractions, or premature ventricular complexes
  • Ventricular fibrillation
  • Ventricular tachycardia
  • Multifocal atrial tachycardia
  • Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome
  • Brugada Syndrome, or SUNDS (sudden unexplained nocturnal death)
  • Long QT Syndrome

Heart Diseases Affecting Heart Lining

  • Endocarditis
  • Pericarditis, such as constrictive pericarditis

 Congenital Heart Diseases

  • Atrial septal defect
  • Ventricular septal defect
  • Congenital aortic stenosis
  • Pulmonic stenosis
  • Patent ductus arteriosus
  • Pulmonary atresia
  • Tricuspid atresia
  • Tetralogy of Fallot
  • Coarctation of the aorta
  • Truncus arteriosus
  • Patent foramen ovale
  • Transposition of great vessels
  • Ebstein’s anomaly of tricuspid valve
  • Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome

 Other Types of Heart Diseases

  • Cardiac tumor, such as myxoma
  • Hypertensive heart disease
  • Sudden cardiac death
