March 23, 2012

If you want to stay healthy, it is important that you eat the right kinds of food. A healthy diet enhances your well-being and reduces your chances of getting diseases such as heart disease and cancer. It is the key to a longer and happier life. If you do not know what kinds of food to include in your diet, you can follow the Healthy Eating Plate and the Healthy Eating Pyramid.

The Healthy Eating Plate

the healthy eating plateDeveloped by the Department of Nutrition of the Harvard School of Public Health, the Healthy Eating Plate shows you the exact portions of healthy foods that you should have on your plate. Half your plate should be filled with colorful vegetables of the greatest variety possible and fruits. In this case, French fries and potatoes should not count as vegetables. Then, reserve a quarter of the plate for whole grains and the other quarter for healthy protein sources such as poultry, fish, nuts, or beans.

According to the Healthy Eating Plate, you should use healthy oils, such as olive oil and canola oil, when you are cooking and preparing salads. As for beverage, it is recommended that you drink one cup of water, or coffee or tea with little or no sugar. To make sure that you do not overeat, choose a plate size that suits your calorie needs. The Healthy Eating Plate also encourages you to lead an active lifestyle.
