Helpful Tips for Beating the Summer Heat

Summer heat can lead to a variety of health problems, ranging from heat exhaustion to heat stroke, and it should not be taken lightly. According to a report by the American College of Emergency Physicians, heat-related illnesses and injuries claim the lives of hundreds of people every year. Heat-related illnesses can turn your supposedly wonderful summer into a nightmare, but there are a number of things you can do to keep them at bay.

Stay well-hydrated 

stay healthy this summerDrink a lot of fluids to prevent dehydration. If you are taking part in physical activities and sweating a lot, you should drink sports drinks to replenish lost salt and minerals.

Protect yourself in the sun 

Apply sunscreen on every part of your body that is exposed to the sun, and wear a brimmed hat and loose and light-colored clothing.

Limit outdoor activity during midday 

Avoid doing outdoor activities during midday, because it is the hottest time of the day. If you really have to exercise in the heat, try not to run out of breath or let your heart beat too fast.

Keep your home well-ventilated 

When you are spending time in your home and not using air-conditioning, open the windows and use fans to improve air circulation.

Recognize heat-related symptoms

Symptoms of heat-related illnesses include sweaty skin with goose bumps, dizziness, headache, nausea, and muscle cramps. If you experience such symptoms, move to a cool and shady place, drink some fluids, lie down, and call a doctor or 911 if necessary.
