September 19, 2012

Water is the second most widely consumed drink in the United States, behind soft drinks, and it is regarded by many experts as the healthiest drink. Whether it is consumed plain or in the form of other beverages or foods, water can benefit your health in many ways.

Water Helps Maintain Fluid Balance in Your Body

About 60% of your body is made up of water. The fluids in your body facilitate many important functions, including circulation, absorption, digestion, transportation of nutrients, regulation of body temperature, and the production of saliva. Without sufficient water, your body will not be able to function properly. When you are running low on fluids, your brain will trigger the thirst mechanism in your body, and you should heed those cues and start drinking water, juice, milk, or any other kind of beverage, except alcohol.

  1. Water Helps Control Calories

Water is a non-caloric drink, and it is the main choice of beverage for many people who are trying to lose weight. Although it does not have any calorie-burning qualities, water can contribute significantly to weight loss if it is used as a substitute for higher-calorie beverages. Eating water-rich foods that are healthy and filling, such as fruits, vegetables, beans, broth-based soups, and oatmeal, can also help you trim your calorie intake.
