If you need additional motivation to keep you moving and active, The American Heart Association can help. They’ve got a couple of programs, perhaps more appropriately called “movements,” that offer support online and in person.
Start Walking Now is described on their website like this:
“Countless people across the country are jumping on board. Join them in the Start! Movement, get walking and start taking a more active role in your health!”
“Find Sole-Mates - friends, colleagues and walkers from across the country who share your goals. Connect with them online for encouragement and support. You might even find someone near you to walk with!”
The American Heart Association has even worked with local businesses and community leaders to identify Start! Walking Paths in communities across the country. You can use their search to find one in your area, or one to use when you travel.
Their webpage also offers you a tracker, an online tool lets you log your activities, distance traveled and daily meals (since you can’t have complete heart-health without diet and exercise). Your MyStart! Walking Plan begins with a quiz to tailor a personalized walking plan for you. Plus they offer daily tips and inspiration to keep you motivated.
And for a more complete heart-health program designed especially for women, they have Go Red for Women, with their 12-week Better U makeover program. It’s described as “a FREE 12-week online nutrition and fitness program that can makeover your heart. Each week will focus on a different area and provide step-by-step guidance. You’ll have access to everything from daily expert tips and an online journal to a downloadable BetterMe coaching tool.”
Throughout the course, they’ll help you search your family history, guide you in learning how to identify the risk factors of heart disease in women, and educate you on changes you can make for lifelong heart health! That’s what we all want, right?
